An Architect Photographing Architecture:
How to commission photography that works for your practice
I offer a 60-minute lunchtime CPD for architecture practices on how to commission photography well, get images that actually serve your projects across awards, publications, websites, and bids.
The session is built around my dual perspective: over twenty years in architectural practice, including leading the V&A Dundee with Kengo Kuma & Associates, and now working professionally as an architectural photographer. I've been on both sides of the brief.
What the CPD covers:
- How architectural photography has evolved — from documentation to atmosphere and interpretation, and why this matters for the images your practice needs today
- A case study using the V&A Dundee, photographed by four different photographers for four different purposes — showing how the same building produces entirely different results depending on brief, intent, and audience.
- How I work: planning, shoot days, multiple exposures, selection, and post-production.
- What to think about before commissioning — because images for awards, publications, websites, and social media require fundamentally different approaches.
- How to write a useful brief to a photographer.
- Common mistakes practices make when commissioning photography, and how to avoid them
Format
40–45 minute presentation + Q&A
Delivered in person at your office (London only) or online
Suitable for all teams: design, comms, marketing, and project leaders
Why this CPD may be useful.
Most practices spend years on a project and little time thinking about how it will be photographed.  A well-commissioned shoot costs the same as a poorly-briefed one, but the results can be the difference between an award submission that works and one that doesn't. After this session, you'll know how to brief a photographer, what to prepare, and how to use photography strategically across your practice.
